PONOKA -- With summer quickly approaching, the Ponoka RCMP are encouraging residents to secure yards, garages, and outbuildings to protect against property theft.

In an advisory, the detachment reminds members of the public that as many Albertans begin tackling outdoor projects with the onset of warmer weather, thieves are just as eager to spring into action, especially when outdoor structures and yard equipment are left unsecured.

They add that power tools, trailers, ATVs, lawn tractors, and even vehicle parts are prime targets when they're visible or easy to remove, and that a few extra minutes spent locking, lighting, and documenting your gear can help prevent theft and save you dollars in the long run.

"Most property crimes are crimes of opportunity," said Constable Logan Hill. "Taking a few minutes to secure sheds, garages, trailers, and equipment can make a significant difference in preventing theft and protecting your property."

Some of their tips include upgrading garden shed and garage side door hasps to solid deadbolts or heavy-duty disc locks, and installing motion activated LED or solar lights above every outbuilding entry point. Ponoka residents are also asked to keep garage doors closed, except when actively loading or unloading, and to utilize reflective film on garage and shed windows, so passers-by cannot inventory what's inside.

Other tips include adding padlocks to roll-up doors and secure interior tool chests with keyed or combination locks, and to always lock your vehicle inside the garage, as many thefts start with a simple door check. They encourage residents to also reinforce weak door frames with strike plate screws at least 3 inches long, and consider using wheel locks or chock and lock systems on trailers and utility equipment.

Ponoka RCMP also note that documenting all owned equipment can also play a key role in crime prevention. This can be done by photographing tools, machinery, trailers, and recreational vehicles from multiple angles, and recording serial numbers, makes, and models in a secure file or app; engrave your driver’s licence number on high‑value items.
