PONOKA -- The RCMP is appealing for witnesses after two semi-tractor trailers collided on May 29th.
The incident occurred at around 2:00 p.m. on Highway 2 at the Township Road 455 overpass. According to police, the crash was caused because one of the semi-trucks was forced to swerve to avoid hitting a Toyota Highlander that was parked under the overpass. RCMP Corporal Troy Savinkoff says the vehicle was parked partially in the driving lane, forcing the semi to collide with another tractor trailer.
"They were kind of in the shadows of the overpass itself, making it very difficult to identify for passing motorists," said Cpl. Savinkoff. "It was when one of the semi-trucks had to take emergency evasive maneuvers to avoid striking the Highlander that the collision occurred,"
Cpl. Savinkoff says that there were no injuries resulting from the crash, though the loads of one of the trailers became dislodged and spilled out onto the highway. RCMP are now asking for public assistance in identifying the vehicle believed to be responsible for the crash -- which is believed to be a blue or black Toyota Highlander -- or for dashcam footage of Southbound Highway 2 just North of the Bear Hills Casino from 1:45 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on May 29, 2025.
If you have any information about this vehicle or dashcam footage of the Highway prior to the collision you're asked to contact Ponoka RCMP at 403-783-4471. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS)
