PONOKA -- The Ponoka Jubilee Library says it has seen a "significant increase in workplace violence incidents in 2025".

The comments were made during a recent presentation by library leadership to Ponoka County Council. On hand for the delegation was board chair Allison Gorell, treasurer Sharon Rowland, and librarian Deanna Cundliff.

To account for the rise in violent incidents, the library is seeking an enhanced financial contribution from the County. This was laid out as part of three separate funding models, two of which include funding for "enhanced workplace safety training."

Another funding scenario brought forward by the library would maintain service levels and support limited furniture replacement, but would not fund any workplace safety training. The final scenario outlined by the library would provide safety supports, while also allowing for an additional staff position and cost-of-living increases.

Overall, the Ponoka Jubilee Library says it remains in good financial standing. This past year they have served 2,799 cardholders, and delivered 268 programs for members of the community. Staffing currently includes eight employees (one full-time, seven part-time), totaling about 3.7 FTE, which they say is below average for similar libraries.

E-content use is up approximately 50 per cent from last year, according to library administration. Presenters noted that about 95 per cent of their operating budget supports core operations, leaving limited funding for programs and collections.
