PONOKA -- Plans are being considered to upgrade the Highway 2A and Highway 53 intersection in Ponoka.
According to the Town of Ponoka's latest master projects list, dated November 25, 2025, the municipality is exploring options to add new turning lights at the intersection. If approved, the proposed turning lights would be for both East-West and North-South turning movements at the intersection.
If the plans are to move ahead, Ponoka administration will need to collaborate with the Alberta Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors. It's stated in their report that these conversations are currently slated to be initiated upon completion of Rodeo Drive/Highway 53 road improvements next year.
Meantime, the Town of Ponoka is also looking at the possibility of erecting large Ponoka letters along the trail across from the Stampede Grounds. This would be done in addition to the Highway 53 Rodeo Drive upgrades and included in budget deliberations for 2026. Administration is now also exploring the possibility of changing the speed limits on Highway 2A north to match the other three highway entrances.
We'll have more information on this story once it becomes available.
