PONOKA COUNTY -- Ponoka County Fire Services has issued a notice regarding the use of fireworks this holiday season.

In a statement, the PCFS reminds residents that a discharge permit is always required prior to the use of fireworks. This can be obtained through the Ponoka County website, as well as the Ponoka County app. Residents are advised that permit applications submitted outside business hours may not be reviewed until the following business day.

Ponoka County Fire Services adds that discharging fireworks less than ten metres from any property line, car, building, or tree, is strictly prohibited and that fireworks cannot be used less than 200 metres from the storage of any flammable or combustible materials, such as above-ground storage tanks.

Discharge of fireworks is not permitted within any individual lots within a multi-lot subdivision, the Summer Village of Parkland Beach, the Town of Ponoka, or the Town of Rimbey. When using fireworks within Ponoka County, residents are asked to notify neighbours beforehand in the case of pets, livestock and/or children who may get startled by the noise.

Ponoka County residents are also asked to observe the area for up to 30 minutes after the discharge of fireworks to ensure all embers are fully extinguished, and to avoid using fireworks if winds are stronger than 20 km/hour. Fire officials ask residents to always remember that even if a discharge permit is obtained, you can be held liable for the loss of livestock, pets, or property.

Ponoka County Fire Services thanks residents for their cooperation in regards to this matter.
