PONOKA COUNTY -- A new Area Structure Plan is being considered near the Samson Cree Nation.

According to Ponoka County, the new ASP would be located in the area located to the southwest of the Highway 2A and Highway 611 intersection, and adjacent to the Samson Cree Nation #137 and the unincorporated municipality of Maskwacis.

The purpose of the new Area Structure Plan would be to facilitate new recreational land uses, as the plan area would provide an opportunity for the Samson Cree Nation to develop freehold lands fronting onto Highway 2A. Ponoka County says that future recreational development in this location will serve area residents, and the travelling public who utilize Highway 2A.

A new ASP for this area would allow for the consideration of various recreational land uses, including baseball diamonds, a Pow Wow Centre, campgrounds, playgrounds, and playfields. The County notes that all recreation developments will be identified at the time of subdivision, and will be required to provide adequate transportation access, and services including, but not limited to, potable water and sanitary facilities.

Before considering a bylaw to adopt Phase 1 of the Area Structure Plan, Council will hold a Public Hearing to give the public an opportunity to provide feedback on the plans, and to suggest any changes. This hearing is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, in the Council Chambers of the Ponoka County Administration Building.
