SYLVAN LAKE -- A helicopter crash yesterday near Sylvan Lake has claimed the life of a 54-year-old woman.

Police say they responded to the deadly incident at around 12:23 p.m. on Sunday, July 6th, near a private landing strip in the area of Range Road 40 in Lacombe County. Upon their arrival to the scene, emergency crews attempted to assist the female passenger, however, she was ultimately pronounced deceased at the scene. She's been identified as a resident of Benalto, Alberta.

The pilot of the helicopter -- a 63-year-old male from Lacombe County -- survived the initial incident and was taken by STARS to hospital in life-threatening condition. At this time, it's not known if there have been any updates to his condition.

RCMP remained on site until the scene was surrendered to investigators with the Transportation Safety Board.
