LACOMBE -- The City of Lacombe has announced the grand opening of the 49C Avenue Pedestrian Plaza.
According to the City, the new plaza is the result of collaborative efforts by City Council, municipal administration, community partners, and the pivotal input and dedication of Lacombe’s residents and local businesses. It includes a variety of new features for the area, including enhanced greenery and decorative paving stones.
"This project is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together towards a shared vision," Councillor and DARP committee member Reuben Konnik said. "The 49C Pedestrian Plaza embodies our community spirit and our commitment to creating spaces where everyone feels welcome. We look forward to seeing it become a vibrant hub of activity for years to come."
Lacombe staff say the new space intends to foster a strong sense of community for residents and visitors, and will be the home to future community events and activities. Sidewalks along 49C Avenue have been widened by one meter on each side with dropped curbs to improve pedestrian flow, and nine new parking stalls have been installed.
"This plaza holds special meaning for our community," said Lacombe CAO Matthew Goudy. "The vision for this space began as part of the early conversations in the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan committee. We wanted to create a place that wasn’t just for passing through, but for gathering, connecting, and enjoying our community together."
The City notes that Partners in this project include Olds Concrete, Stantec, and O2 Designs, as well as crucial funding from the Government of Alberta.
