MASKWACIS -- A shooting in Maskwacis has resulted in the death of a 20-year-old male.

According to RCMP, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, June 1, at a residence in the Samson Cree First Nation. The deceased -- who has been identified as Travis Jason Crier -- was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the cause of death was determined to be homicide. RCMP Inspector Richard McKay says the death is one of several recent incidents involving illegal firearms, and that police will be increasing their efforts to combat local gun violence.

"This is another tragic and senseless loss of a four nations community member," said Inspector McKay. "There is a direct relationship between this death and illegal firearms in Maskwacis. The community is saying it, we are saying it, and our leaders are saying it: enough is enough."

He says that police have met with local tribal leaders this week to discuss the issue, and that all parties are on the same page that gun violence and illegal firearms need to be made a top priority.

"During our meetings with the Chiefs and Counsels of all 4 Nations of Maskwacis, illegal guns and gun violence are a serious concern and one they want combatted," said McKay. "It’s important that residents know they will have our full cooperation and support. If you know of the existence of illegal guns, there are ways to reach out to us safely, Call us."

Police have not yet indicated whether-or-not any arrests have been made in relation to the weekend shooting, but an investigation into the case does remain ongoing.
