Environment Canada issues advisory due to "damaging" winds

PONOKA COUNTY -- Environment Canada says winds up to 90 km/h are expected to hit Ponoka County on Thursday.

This comes as a special weather advisory states that a strong low-pressure system will move through the region over the next few days. It notes that by early Thursday morning, potentially damaging winds will develop. Locally, these gusts are expected to reach up to 90 km/h, while winds reaching up to 100 km/h are expected through parts of eastern Alberta.

"Damage to roofs, fences, branches, or soft shelters is likely," states the advisory. "Prepare for some disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities. Driving conditions will likely be very difficult. High-sided vehicles could be overturned by the wind. Secure loose objects. If outside, protect yourself from flying or falling debris."

In addition to the severe winds, the low-pressure system is also expected to bring rainfall throughout the day on Thursday, with upwards of 30 mm possible by Friday morning. The winds are expected to weaken later Thursday evening.
