BASHAW -- Alberta's chuckwagon racing community is mourning the loss of Reg Johnstone.

Reg Johnstone, also known as "The Bashaw Flash", passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, surrounded by his family in Lethbridge. Born on July 14, 1948, Johnstone first began riding chariots in the mid-1970s before moving on to the sport of chuckwagon racing in 1976. His official debut took place at the Drumheller Stampede on June 30, 1976.

During his illustrious career -- which spanned a total of five decades -- Johnstone captured 35 major victories. He was the 2005 World Champion Chuckwagon Driver, a three-time Ponoka Stampede Champion, and the Calgary Stampede Aggregate winner in 2011. He retired from the sport following the 2013 season, with his final appearance coming at an event in Rocky Mountain House.

Beyond his accomplishments, Johnstone was known for his storytelling, sense of humor, and genuine kindness. In a statement from the Town of Bashaw, the municipality says he was a proud local ambassador and a well-respected member of the World Professional Chuckwagon Association.

Members of the public are invited to attend Johnstone's celebration of life on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 1 p.m. at the Bashaw Community Centre. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, can be made to the Bashaw Multi 4-H Club at the service or by e-transfer to regjohnstonememorial@gmail.com.
