Charges pending following shooting incident in Maskwacis

MONTANA FIRST NATION -- Charges are pending following a shooting incident on the Montana First Nation.

Maskwacis RCMP say they were made aware of the incident at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, after receiving reports that a shooting had taken place in the community. This prompted a major police presence in the area and led to a multi-jurisdictional search for the suspect. In the early hours of Wednesday, Sept. 23, police confirmed that the male suspect had been taken into custody.

Full details regarding the incident, including the suspect's name and information regarding any possible victims, have not yet been communicated as charges against the suspect are still pending. However, police have confirmed that they believe the shooting was targeted. 

The Tuesday night search involved multiple police agencies from across the region, including the Maskwacis RCMP, Wetaskiwin RCMP, and the Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team. During the search, police had instructed members of the public to not open their doors to strangers and to avoid picking up hitchhikers.
