PONOKA COUNTY -- Tom Kootstra will be seeking a seat on Ponoka County Council in the upcoming civic election.
Kootstra will be up against incumbent Doug Weir in the race to decide the next Councillor for Division 3. Kootstra is the current Chair of the Ponoka Right to Farm Society, and was formerly involved with Alberta Milk as a Delegate, Director, and eventually Chair. Speaking to 89.7 The One, Kootstra provided his reasons for joining the race.
"I believe that a healthy democratic governance structure is strengthened when competent people compete for the privilege of serving their community," said Kootstra. "That's my conviction, and that's why I'm throwing my hat in the ring."
Kootstra says he's committed to fiscal responsibility and ensuring each tax dollar is delivered with high value for residents. He adds that one of his areas of focus if elected would relate to local agriculture in Ponoka County.
"There's a lot of discussion around agricultural subdivisions," said Kootstra. "And how do we protect farmland and yet, allow subdivision development throughout the County."
Kootstra notes his long-standing roots in the community, having previously operated a dairy farm in the Crestomere area alongside his wife and family. He believes that his commitment to the agriculture community has given him firsthand insight into the challenges and opportunities faced by local farmers.
"My governance leadership skills were significantly developed when I was a Delegate, and later the Chair, of Alberta Milk," said Kootrstra. "So, I would submit with confidence in a proven leader."
Ponoka County's 2025 election will take place on October 20, 2025.
