PONOKA -- Carla Lloyd will be looking to retain her seat on Ponoka Council in the upcoming municipal election.
Lloyd has served as a Councillor since 2013 and will be seeking her fourth term on October 20. She was born and raised in Wynyard, Saskatchewan, and moved to Ponoka in 1988. Speaking to 89.7 The One, she spoke about some of the top accomplishments she's been involved with during her time on Council. One of these includes the ongoing Highway 53 Corridor Improvement Project.
"Highway 53 has probably taken six to eight years of advocacy to our provincial government to gain funding for," said Lloyd. "That probably is one of the most costly, but productive ventures we've been successful in."
Aside from her duties as a Councillor, Lloyd has served on various Boards and Committees, including the Police Advisory Committee, Ponoka Jubilee Library Board, and the Community Enhancement Committee. In addition, she's also a member of the Provincial Professional Practice Council for Psychiatric Nursing and an AHS Director for Addiction and Mental Health.
She says that if re-elected for her fourth term, one of her top areas of focus will be on boosting local housing availability.
"Housing has been an issue for both the under served, as well as the low-to-middle class," said Lloyd. "I think we need to do a ton of work to build our economic drivers, as well as advocacy for safe and affordable housing."
She notes that another one of her priorities is economic development. Lloyd believes that having a stronger economic base in Ponoka will bring more people into the community, effectively lowering taxes and strengthening local services.
