SHERWOOD PARK -- Stony Plain Flyers goaltender Parker Nome had a game for the ages against Sherwood Park.
The rookie netminder made a jaw-dropping 71 saves as the Flyers took down the CJHL East Division-leading Knights on Tuesday, December 9, at Randy Rosen Arena in Sherwood Park. Prior to Tuesday's 5-4 overtime victory, Nome had appeared in eleven games for the Flyers this season, putting up a 3-8-0 record with an .893 save percentage.
According to the organization, Nome's outstanding performance against Sherwood Park was one for the record books. His 71 saves against the Knights marked the highest single-game save total for any Flyers netminder since goalie statistics first started being recorded back in 2013.
Tuesday's major upset victory over the Knights also saw four different Flyers find the back of the net. Gavin Harper scored his 13th of the season at 1:38 of the 1st period, before Emmit Raw tallied at 15:16 of the second. Kash Rose notched his second of the year late in the second frame, while Henry McLellan scored twice -- including the overtime game-winner.
McLellan's 19 goals now has him eighth in league scoring, while his 34 points in 24 games has him 11th. The Stony Plain Flyers will look to continue their momentum into Friday's game against the winless Spruce Grove Regals.
