Town of Devon investigates cyber security incident

DEVON -- The Town of Devon was the victim of a recent cyber-attack.

Devon staff say the incident occurred on Thursday, July 21, and affected both the Town's servers and computer systems. They add that a preliminary investigation into the matter determined that some personal information may have been compromised, though the full extent or nature of the data involved is unknown at this time.

Despite this, the Town notes that there is currently no evidence that any of the information has been misused. Devon's Chief Administrative Officer Corey Levasseur says they're working to determine exactly what happened and how future incidents can be prevented.

"The privacy and protection of our residents’ information is a top priority," said Levasseur. "We are working closely with cybersecurity professionals to understand what occurred, assess any potential risks, and ensure our systems are reinforced to prevent future threats."

The municipality says that upon detecting the incident, they took immediate action to secure systems, limit potential impacts, and initiate a comprehensive investigation. Independent cyber security experts were also engaged to assist with the response, and to guide recovery efforts in accordance with best industry practices.

The Town of Devon is now reviewing its digital infrastructure and security protocols, as well as exploring additional protective measures to help prevent future cyber security incidents.

Additional updates on this story will be shared once they become available.
