LEDUC -- Leduc RCMP conducted a one-day initiative aimed at enhancing community safety earlier this month.

This came as part of "Project Street Light", which was conducted on October 10th in partnership between the RCMP, Leduc Enforcement Services, and Leduc FCSS. In a statement, the Mounties say the goal of the joint initiative was to boost safety, restore public confidence, and address disorder within the community. Constable Lindsay McNab spoke to 93.1 The One about some of the core principles behind the operation.

"Street safety and enforcement, targeting criminal activity, open-air drug use, and behaviors that compromise public order," said Cst. McNab. "Partnering with local agencies to connect vulnerable individuals to supports such as housing, addictions, and mental health services."

Cst. McNab says that through a blend of proactive policing and compassionate intervention, the operation produced the following results:

  • 5 arrests
  • 6 warrants executed
  • $5,500 in fines
  • 29 violation tickets
  • 37 written warnings issued
  • 6 life-safety supply packages provided
  • 7 individuals accepted follow-up support services
  • 21 positive tickets issued recognizing good behavior in the community
  • 3 bar walks and 3 drone flights conducted
  • 304 kilometres patrolled by the RCMP bike unit and Leduc Enforcement Services
  • 3 encampments dismantled

"Project Street Light" involved members from Leduc Stryke, the Leduc General Investigation Section (GIS), the Leduc Police and Crisis Team (LPACT), Alberta RCMP Traffic, municipal bylaw officers, and community outreach partners. Cst. McNab says that due to the success for the one-day initiative, police would consider conducting a similar operation in the future.

"If it's seen as something that was a worthwhile project, then it's something that we would want to continue for the safety of our community." said Cst. McNab.

She adds that the initiative reflects the ongoing partnership between enforcement and social service agencies in Leduc, working together to make the community safer and more supportive for everyone.
