LEDUC COUNTY -- The Pigeon Lake Skateway is back for another season.

The Skateway -- located at Grandview-Poplar Bay on the southern end of Pigeon Lake-- officially opened to the public as of Dec. 10, 2025. This year's amenity contains multiple new rinks and skating trails for the public to enjoy, all carved out by the volunteer organization known as the "Rink Rats".

The organization says the Skateway is an annual volunteer-run initiative for the benefit of the local community and visitors to the area. They note that the ice is reported to be about 8" thick, depending on the area, and that the multiple rinks and trails stretch as far as Hambin Park in Grandview.

It's also noted that the Skateway evolves regularly as ice and weather conditions fluctuate and the availability of volunteer resources changes. In December of 2023, the public amenity was over eight kilometres of cleared skateways, several rinks with benches, and fire pits.

Users of the Skateway are reminded to always use good judgement and practice ice safety. There is an element of risk with outdoor activities of this nature, and users assume all liability for their actions. Due to the variable thickness of the ice, the public is asked to never assume all ice in a given area is safe. In the event of an emergency, users are asked to call 9-1-1.

Visitors are also advised that there are porta-potties available in the area, one at the Poplar Bay Recreation Centre, one at Access Point 2, one on the ice, between those two, and at the Pigeon Lake Provincial Park. Recommended parking locations at the Poplar Bay Rec Centre, 2nd Street, and Hamblin Park.
