NEW SAREPTA -- Leduc County is considering plans to name a local road in New Sarepta after Dennis Levasseur.

In a statement, the County says the naming request aims to honour Levasseur's contributions to the community. The roadway in question is currently unnamed and is located between Centre Street and the New Sarepta Demolition Derby grounds. The road provides access for residents and visitors to the New Sarepta Demolition Derby site.

"Mr. Levasseur has played a pivotal role in organizing and sustaining the annual New Sarepta Demolition Derby, an event that has become both a significant community celebration and an important local fundraiser within New Sarepta," said the County in a statement.

The Annual Demolition Derby, held every September, has become an integral part of the community for the last 40 years. Following a brief hiatus between 1996 and 1999, the New Sarepta Minor Hockey Association took over operations of the event in 2000.

Upon receipt of a written request or petition from area residents, Leduc County Council may, at its discretion, name local roads under varying circumstances. This includes county main roads, roads passing by a former rural school site, and roads passing by a site or former site recognized to have historical significance of a local or regional nature.

Leduc County staff will present the proposed road naming to Council at their regular meeting on May 12, 2026. Council will then deliberate and vote on the proposed name, and, if approved, the unnamed roadway will be formally designated as Dennis Levasseur Street.

Those who wish to speak either for or against this proposed change can attend the meeting at 1:30 p.m. Residents are not required to register to speak and will be given an open opportunity to speak during the open public session.
