LEDUC -- The City of Leduc says its Council Chambers will be closed until the fall due to renovations.

According to the municipality, the work scheduled to take place over the next several months will represent the first phase of their plans to revamp the City's Council Chambers. This will consist of various upgrades and additions which aim to improve accessibility, safety, and the overall experience for those who attend meetings in person.

Leduc staff say the current phase of renovations will include a new ramp to enhance wheelchair access, as well as modernized millwork and architectural finishes. They add that safety upgrades will also be completed to "support a secure and accessible environment for Council, City staff, and the public", though it hasn't been specified what those will look like.

For the second phase of the renovations -- scheduled to take place next year -- the City will be installing technology, voicing, and voting system upgrades. During the ongoing work taking place from now until November, Leduc City Council meetings will be held in the Lede Room at the Leduc Civic Centre until the renovation is complete.

Leduc's next Council meeting is scheduled for August 18th.
