Impaired driving investigation underway in Devon

DEVON -- Alberta RCMP are investigating after a case of impaired driving led to serious injuries.

Mounties say that the incident took place shortly after midnight on Dec. 20, 2025, along Athabasca Avenue in Devon. It's reported that a vehicle lost control before crashing into a parked vehicle and a tree. Upon arrival, emergency responders tended to five individuals, all occupants of the one vehicle.

According to RCMP, all of the vehicle's occupants had various levels of injury. Two of the occupants had serious life-threatening injuries, while another was airlifted to hospital by STARS. The fourth occupant was transported to hospital by ambulance, and remained in hospital as of Dec. 22, 2025.

The driver, a 20-year-old Devon resident, was taken into custody where they provided breath samples more than twice the legal limit. It wasn't revealed whether they suffered any injuries in the crash. The driver now has charges pending for impaired driving causing bodily harm and an RCMP investigation continues.

"Investigations like this are yet another reminder of the dangers of impaired driving," said Sgt. Rob Gillies. "Nearly 25 per cent of all fatal collisions have impaired driving as a contributing factor."

Gillies reminds residents that police are out in full-force this holiday season to ensure Alberta's roads remain safe.
