BEAUMONT -- Lisa Vanderkwaak is running to become the new Mayor of Beaumont.
Vanderkwaak has more than 25 years’ experience with various local and regional associations, including the Beaumont Business Association Board and Edmonton Global. In conversation with 93.1 The One, she talked about her past work with the local Chamber of Commerce.
"I actually helped form the Chamber in Beaumont. I was on the Board for six years -- three of those as President," said Vanderkwaak. "I was very actively engaged in working with the economic development department, as well as Council and Administration."
She describes her platform as having a focus on lowering taxes and improving City services.
After moving to Beaumont in 2005, Vanderkwaak raised three children as a widow. She has a Master's Degree of Speech Sciences and Audiology, and has also been a local business owner in the City for more than five years. She says that if elected, one of her top priorities would be to slow down Beaumont's densification.
"We can't change what's been done -- but we can put a pause and say let's review and revise this plan," said Vanderkwaak. "So it aligns with the people of Beaumont, and what they want and need."
Like many municipalities across Leduc County, Beaumont continues to see a massive population influx, which will no doubt be a top area of focus for the next Mayor and Council. With current Mayor Bill Daneluik running for a seat on Council, Beaumont will have a new Mayor after next week's vote.
Lisa Vanderkwaak will be up against Duanne Mann, Gil Poitras, and current Councillor Catherine McCook.
