YEG announces new non-stop flight to Iceland

The Edmonton International Airport will offer a weekly non-stop flight to Iceland starting this summer.

According to YEG, the new service between Edmonton and the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik will be operated by WestJet. The flight will be available to travelers starting on June 26, 2025, and run throughout the summer months. Adrian Warchola -- Director of Air Service Development -- says it's an exciting time for the airport.

"It's exciting because it not only offers a new destination for Edmontonians over the summer period, but also offers excellent opportunities for visitors to explore our region as well," said Warchola. "We work very closely with our airline partners, and in particular WestJet -- as our largest carrier by capacity -- on a regular year-round basis. We're really happy that WestJet has answered the call."

The new service between Edmonton and Reykjavik will operate on board the airline's rapidly growing 737 MAX fleet. Warchola also notes that Edmonton International Airport is constantly looking to add new destinations.

"We're always working to locate where the destinations are that passengers want to go, and where they are booking," said Warchola. "That includes within Canada -- lots of Canadians exploring the beauty of Canada -- but also into Europe and Asia."

Warchola adds that the airport is set to officially return to its pre-pandemic passenger levels in 2025, following years of recovery. 

Iceland is nicknamed the "Land of Fire and Ice" because of the dramatic geological contrast of its active volcanoes and massive glaciers, which coexist on the same island. Its capital city of Reykjavik had a population of 138,772 as of January 1, 2025.
