WARBURG -- The Village of Warburg is warning residents about the dangers of leaving keys inside vehicles.
This comes as the municipality says they've seen an increase in vehicle thefts in the community. In a statement, Warburg staff advise residents to never leave keys inside vehicles -- even for a short amount of time -- and to never leave running vehicles unattended.
They also ask residents of the Village to ensure vehicles are locked at all times, and that valuables, such as garage door openers or personal documents, are kept out of sight. Members of the public are also advised to park in well-lit areas whenever possible.
In 2024, there were 8,272 auto thefts in Alberta RCMP jurisdiction, and 5,998 thefts from vehicles. In May 2025, there were 643 auto thefts and 502 thefts from vehicles. Trucks are the most commonly stolen vehicles, according to police.
If you see something suspicious, report it to your local police service. If you see a crime in progress, call 9-1-1. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
