LEDUC COUNTY -- RCMP have provided an update on a deadly vehicle collision from June 28, 2025.

The incident saw a Dodge Ram and a Chevrolet Silverado collide on Highway 778 at Township Road 490 in Leduc County. RCMP attended the scene along with Emergency Medical Services and area Fire Departments. Two occupants of the Chevrolet Silverado, a 31-year-old female and 30-year-old male, were pronounced deceased at the scene.

Meantime, the 41-year-old driver of the Dodge Ram was taken to a local medical facility to be further assessed for injuries. RCMP Corporal Troy Savinkoff says that it was determined that the driver of the Dodge Ram was impaired at the time of the collision.

"On September 7th, we did arrest and charge John David Tobin -- he's an Edmonton resident, a 41-year-old," said Cpl. Savinkoff.

Tobin was charged with two counts of operation while impaired by alcohol causing death, two counts of operation while over 80 mg% alcohol causing death, and another two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

"This really unfortunate occurrence highlights the dangers of impaired driving," said Cpl. Savinkoff. "30 per cent of the fatalities that we deal with on our Alberta roads, alcohol is a contributing factor."

Tobin was taken before a Justice of the Peace and initially remanded into custody. His next court date is set for Oct. 23, 2025, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Leduc.
