LEDUC -- Leduc RCMP will be hosting their 'Stakeout at the Skatepark' event on June 25.

The event will be hosted in conjunction with Rumor Skateboards and feature a variety of activities to celebrate the start of summer. According to the local police, recent concerns have been raised by residents and the school board about the vibe at the skatepark, with some people feeling unwelcome.

Constable Stephen Curtiss of the Leduc RCMP CPVS unit says the event is their way of hitting the reset button, showing up in a positive way, and reminding everyone that the park is for the whole community.

"Whether you're into skateboarding, scootering, biking, rollerblading, whatever you want to do at the park, you can come by," said Cst. Curtiss. "We want to bring community partners together to make it a welcoming environment."

Cst. Curtiss says that while he couldn't get into details about any calls for service that have been received, he confirmed that there has been a desire from the community to bring back more of a family atmosphere at the skatepark. He says the June 25th event will give residents a chance to come together.

"We have Starbucks coming, firefighters, the Leduc Peace Officers will be there," said Cst. Curtiss. "Just for an afternoon of good vibes, connection, and family fun."

He also notes that the Mounties plan on boosting their presence at the skatepark going forward, with some officers to be on site on Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. throughout the summer. The 'Stakeout at the Skatepark' event will run from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on June 25th.
