CALMAR -- Calmar Council has approved a revised design for the new daycare being constructed on 50 Street.

This comes as during construction, an error occurred that saw part of the ventilation system that was supposed to be built within the building erected on the outside. Calmar staff say that considering the location of the equipment on the building, as well as the building's location, the current situation is not aesthetic. CAO Sylvan Losier notes that the mistake was made while the applicant was in another country.

"It was a decision made without the applicant’s knowledge," said Losier during Calmar's regular council meeting held on Feb. 17. "He came back from India, where he was sick, and said whoa, what is this, that's not the plan."

To rectify the issue, Council approved a revised design that will involve hiding the system and the roof-top unit (box them in) with the same material and colour as the building. The township says the enclosure would be built to also provide a secured and controlled access to the roof-top unit, which is required for maintenance of the building.

"We caught it quick and addressed the situation," said Councillor Sean Carnahan. "We probably could have been the hard guys at the table and said no, you'll need another $50,000 cost for your build, but I don't think it makes sense for HVAC ducting."

The new daycare building is being constructed at 5007 50 Street and is noted by Calmar staff as being near completion. It's expected that once the weather warms up, the finishing touches on the building will be put in place.
