LEDUC -- RCMP have released their Q3 crime statistics for the City of Leduc.

The data for October through December shows that persons crimes saw a seven per cent increase when compared to the same period from 2024. This was driven by a slight rise in assaults, sexual assaults, and abductions. This comes as incidents of uttering threats and robberies saw a decrease over the same quarter a year prior.

Meantime, property crimes in the City of Leduc saw a fourteen per cent decline during the last quarter when compared to 2024. Theft under $5,000 saw the biggest plunge, falling from 143 to 109. Cases of mischief and possession of stolen property also noted a significant decrease during Q3. Leduc RCMP Inspector Kiel Samotej talks about their recent crime prevention efforts.

"Last quarter, we conducted five project-based investigations, two property-related projects and three drug-related projects targeting the City of Leduc," said Samotej. "Project Street Light, a joint enforcement project with the RCMP and the City of Leduc CPOs, saw great success in helping deal with the unhoused community issues."

He adds that during the quarter, proactive policing and community safety efforts remained strong, with 1,158 targeted patrols and 55 CPVS patrols focused on hotspot locations, high-traffic areas, schools, and major community events to enhance visibility, deter crime, and respond to community concerns. One of the crime trends that was observed during the colder months was a rise in vehicle thefts on the north side of the City.

"We saw a huge jump in the month of January, the coldest month of the year, up in the northern zone of Leduc -- in the hotels area," said Samotej. "It has to do with a lot of people running their vehicles, and the vehicles then get stolen."

Other notable crime category increases from Q3 2025 included municipal bylaw infractions, and failure to comply/breach of release conditions. Incidents listed under the Mental Health Act were down from 130 in Q3 2024 to 114 during the same quarter last year.

For the Leduc General Investigation Section, they note the most prominent investigation from Q3 involved a case of youth sexual assault. In this incident, the victim invited the suspect -- who she met on Instagram -- over to her residence. The suspect then assaulted the victim before being chased out of the home. The suspect later came back to the residence, broke into the home, and assaulted the victim with bear spray. In December 2025, the suspect was arrested and charged.
