LEDUC -- Ohpaho Secondary School Principal Dan Lake has been honoured by the Alberta Teachers' Association.
Lake was named as a recipient of the Distinguished Leadership Award, which was handed out at a provincial event earlier this month. The annual award is given to exceptional principals, vice-principals, and assistant principals who excel in providing high-quality learning opportunities and demonstrate excellence in the Alberta Leadership Quality Standard.
Dan Lake was recognized for his unwavering commitment to students, staff, and the Ohpaho school community. Lake is the school's first-ever principal, and has played a critical role in building a school culture where students feel supported, staff feel valued, and everyone is encouraged to do their best. The nomination was submitted by OSS teacher Justin Gabinet, who has worked with Lake for the past two years.
"I am honoured to receive this award," said Lake. "The work required to open a new school cannot be attributed to any one person. I am grateful to be part of the Ohpaho team and for the opportunity to serve alongside such dedicated people. This recognition is a reflection of their commitment and has been an incredible culmination of my career with Black Gold School Division."
Lake has served in school leadership roles for more than two decades and has now completed his second year as principal of Ohpaho Secondary School. In a statement, the BGSD says the award is a reflection of Lake's focus on relationships, community building, and supporting others.
"Dan is an amazing leader who consistently goes above and beyond to support staff and students! Black Gold has been fortunate to have his energy and enthusiasm for learning," said Michael Borgfjord, Superintendent of Black Gold School Division. "On behalf of Black Gold -- a huge congratulations to Dan!"
