LEDUC COUNTY -- A major project aimed at boosting internet service across rural Leduc County is set to begin soon.

The broadband infrastructure project will include the installation of new fibre optic cable and enclosures for network equipment and connections. This work will be undertaken by Xplore Incorporated, and is supported by both federal and provincial funding through the Universal Broadband Fund and the Alberta Minister of Technology and Innovation.

For the underground installation portion of the work, plowing will be completed utilizing specialized equipment to lay cables in trenches, which is aimed at minimizing surface disruption. The next step will be directional boring for minimal disruption in sensitive areas, followed by trenching to lay cables where aerial installation is not feasible.

The installation of fibre optic cable and grade-level boxes will take place at a total of nine locations:

1) Range Road 233 south from Township Road 510 to Highway 625, including sections of Vantage Point, Gateway Estates, The Highlands, and Strawberry Estates.

2) Range Road 234 south of Township Road 510 – including sections of Arbor Estates and Amarillo Park.

3) Township Road 505 between Range Road 235 and Range Road 234 – including sections of Hawkstone.

4) Hay Lakes Trail (Looma Road) from Township Road 510 to Range Road 232.

5) Range Road 232 from Hay Lakes Trail South – including sections of Martinview Estates, Looma Estates, Hilltop Estates, Paterson Park, Scottsdale Estates, Brookside, and Twin Peaks Ranch Estates.

6) Township Road 502 east of Range Road 232 to Range Road 231.

7) Range Road 231 south of Township Road 502 – including Richdale Estates.

8) Range Road 240 south of Township Road 510 to Highway 625 - including sections of Goudreau Estates and Green Acres Estates.

9) Township Road 505 east of Range Road 240 to west of Range Road 235 - including sections of Beau Hills Estates and Carriage Hills.

According to Leduc County, work is scheduled to get underway soon, and the project is expected to be completed sometime in the second quarter of 2026.
