Local arts advocate receives municipal recognition

LEDUC -- Ingrid Shields of the Leduc Arts Foundry was recently recognized for her two decades of service to local arts and culture.

In September, Shields earned the City of Leduc's Arts, Culture, and Heritage Award for her passion, leadership, and tireless volunteerism. For over two decades, she has been a driving force in the growth and success of the arts and culture in Leduc.

Her contributions have been felt across the city through her work with the Leduc Art Club, as well as the Leduc Arts Foundry, which she helped launch in 2016. Shields spoke with 93.1 The One about her thoughts on taking home the municipal honours. 

"That means such a great deal to me," said Shields. "It represents something I care deeply about. Arts and culture bring people together and make our community stronger -- and it's for all ages." 

Since its humble beginnings, the Leduc Arts Foundry has become a beacon for local artists with various programs and events such as the annual "Leduc Art Walk" held each summer. Despite the organization's recent success, Shields says they have no intention of slowing down. 

"We've got wood working coming up, rug-hooking, candle-making, soap-making, a silversmith workshop in May at our pottery studio," said Shields. "Our Winter Pottery Market is on November 21st from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m."

The Foundry will also be hosting an artist reception and book release for "Payton and the Porcupine and the Big Feelings" on Oct. 24 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. where residents can meet the illustrator David Tuff and author Danyelle Lynch. Then, on the 25th, Canada Council will be doing a talk for artists on grants available to them from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

For the month of November, in recognition of Remembrance Day, the Leduc Arts Foundry gallery is inviting military members, veterans, and their families to share artwork, photographs, medals, or other meaningful items that honour their service and experiences.
