LEDUC -- The City of Leduc will decide the future of the Deer Valley Dog Park in the coming weeks.

The off-leash park -- located at the north end of Grant McEwan Blvd -- was introduced as a two-year pilot project back in 2023. According to the municipality, the park is set to be discussed during 2026 budget deliberations, and pending budget approval, may become a permanent feature in Leduc for 2028.

Leduc staff say that the off-leash area has been positively received by visitors since its inception two years ago. Based on feedback after the first year, the pilot space was expanded with new benches, trees, and waste bins to enhance the comfort and appeal of the site. If approved, the temporary site will continue seasonally (May – Sept.) until a year-round permanent amenity is in place.

Meantime, changes could be coming to another popular dog park -- the K9 off-leash dog park located near the LRC. The amenity is 40 acres of mixed parkland with trails through forest and wetlands. The area is fully fenced and also includes a separate fenced area for smaller dogs. If their current plans go ahead, the K9 off-leash dog park could see a significant reconfiguration in its overall shape.

The change would be to accommodate a proposed new school in the area. If approved, the dog park will change in shape, but the overall size will stay the same, according to the City. The main entrance (Entrance 1, currently closed) would be moved slightly north. The City of Leduc notes in a statement that the park will remain open if the fence reconfiguration work occurs, which would start after the current construction is complete in Spring 2026.

In the coming weeks, the multiway and temporary entrance to the K9 Off-Leash Dog Park will be temporarily closed for several days due to the nearby installation of a sanitary line. Residents are asked to access the park through an alternate gate during this time.
