LEDUC -- A green space located in Leduc's Woodbend neighbourhood has been recognized as "W.E. Hawkins Park".

W.E. Hawkins was the ninth mayor in Leduc's history and was also the owner and operator of a local hardware store. In a statement, the City of Leduc says W.E. Hawkins played an important role in shaping the community, and that the park naming helps preserve his legacy for future generations.

"Recognizing individuals who have helped shape our community is one way we honour Leduc’s history," said Lars Hansen, Mayor of the City of Leduc. "Naming W.E. Hawkins Park celebrates the lasting impact of his service and contributions to the city we call home."

The space now features official signage marking the newly dubbed park after Leduc City Council approved the new name back in January. The idea was first brought forward through a recommendation from the City's Parks, Recreation, and Culture Advisory Board. W.E. Hawkins Park is located in the northwestern section of the Woodbend neighbourhood, west of Hawthorn Way and north of Lilac Close.
