Leduc County targets safety improvements along Range Road 233

LEDUC COUNTY -- Six new road safety signs are being installed at intersections along Range Road 233 in Leduc County.

Councillor Kelly-Lynn Lewis says that these signs have been installed in response to increased concerns and incidents along this corridor. She notes that several of these intersections have been reviewed from a road design, visibility, and safety perspective, and that while infrastructure and intersection safety remain important considerations, driver awareness and decision-making continue to be critical factors in preventing collisions.

"With the seriousness of the incidents that have occurred in this area, including those that have resulted in the tragic loss of life, I want to approach this message with care and respect for the individuals, families, and community members who have been affected," writes Councillor Lewis. "Please approach every intersection with caution, even one you travel through every day."

The new road safety signs have been installed at multiple intersections along Range Road 233, including at Township Road 500 (East & West bound), Airport Road (Northbound & Southbound), and at Highway 623 (Northbound & Southbound).

This comes as Leduc County is also looking to crack down on traffic violations along Township Road 490 and Range Road 263. As part of these renewed enforcement efforts, 515 tickets were issued along the two roads over the first six months of the year. Leduc County's Protective Services Manager Tylor Bennett says that most of those ticketed are drivers from outside the area.

"While patrols and tickets continue to rise, peace officers are finding that the majority of drivers charged are not from Leduc County," said Bennett. "This indicates that local residents' driving behaviors are improving, but visitors and those individuals passing through the county are not."

In one instance, a vehicle was stopped by a peace officer for traveling at a speed of 146 km/hr in a posted 90 km/hr zone on Township Road 490 west of Range Road 255.
