LEDUC COUNTY -- A new Municipal Development Plan has been adopted by Leduc County.

According to the County, the new MDP was necessary due to provincial changes that took effect back in April of this year. These changes saw the Alberta Government dissolve the now former Edmonton Metropolitan Region Growth Plan, which was referenced prominently in Leduc County's former Municipal Development Plan. County Planner Ata Muhammad says the provincial changes made crafting a new MDP inevitable.

"References to the regional growth plan within the MDP may create confusion," said Muhammad. "The removal will provide greater clarity and ensure compliance with the current regulatory framework."

Leduc County last updated its Municipal Development Plan in 2024 through Bylaw 03-24. The update incorporated policy directives from the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Growth Plan (EMRGP), and reflected guidance from studies and initiatives undertaken by the County since the MDP was first revised in 2019. County Mayor Tanni Doblanko spoke on the amended document prior to its approval this week.

"Thank you to our administration for clearly explaining that this was really about housekeeping," said Doblanko. "It was about removing something that is redundant, so that our documents remain relevant."

A Municipal Development Plan is a legally mandated, long-term policy document that guides a municipality's growth and development, while outlining desired future land uses, infrastructure, and environmental strategies.
