LEDUC -- The City of Leduc is exploring the creation of a new memorial bridge at the K9 off-leash dog park.
According to City staff, the "rainbow bridge" would serve as a place of memorial and remembrance for people who have lost their pets. The idea for the bridge first came forward at Leduc's Parks, Recreation, and Culture Board meeting in March, when a member of the public brought the idea to the Board's attention.
The municipality says the proposed development of the bridge would be fundraised and sponsored by residents and supporting businesses. Leduc Councillor Lars Hansen laid out the concept for the memorial bridge at this week's council meeting.
"The concept is to have a memorial bridge where pet owners can go and grieve, or remember their lost pets," said Councillor Hansen. "It's to be funded through contributed funds, the PRC Board agreed with it, and passed a motion to recommend that Council move forward with it."
A Leduc staff report on the matter indicates that if approved, the new monument will be made of wood with a natural finish, and a plaque or sign will be featured. The plaque or sign will also feature a rainbow and memorial design, along with the poem and an explanation of the bridge's meaning. Collars and other items left on the bridge will be removed annually and appropriately disposed of, and a bench will also be installed upon completion of the project.
City staff will examine the feasibility of the new bridge and return to Council at a future date.
