Leduc Arts Foundry seeking rent subsidy extension for pottery studio

LEDUC -- The Leduc Arts Foundry is seeking a rent subsidy extension from the City of Leduc in order to continue the momentum of their new pottery studio. 

The request was brought forward by Foundry Chair Teresa Creber, along with Pottery Instructor and Board Secretary Paige McAra at Leduc's regular council meeting held on Monday, Aug. 24. The organization is looking to extend its pottery studio rent subsidy until December 2028 in order to help the pottery studio maintain its operations while community demand grows. 

The Leduc Arts Foundry launched its pottery studio in January 2025, and since that time, has seen a steady increase in participation from members of the public. In their address to council, Paige McAra spoke about some of the many perks of the studio, citing physical, cognitive, and even therapeutic benefits.

"It can help with hand-eye coordination and spatial planning," said McAra. "There are even studies showing that it can show a decrease in stress, depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms, as well as greater self-esteem, mood, mindfulness, interest in life, self-efficacy, social support, and an improved sense of holistic well-being." 

According to the organization, pottery demand continues to rise, including a large continual youth presence during weekend pottery programs and seniors for the one-day offerings and hand molding programs. Chair Teresa Creber notes that their request for an extended rent subsidy for the pottery studio would put them in a better position to handle facility costs. 

"It does not go to consumables or the staff -- it just supports the rent," said Creber. "As we have a triple-net lease, every year we've had a five per cent increase, and utilities increase. We've also just added another kiln." 

Leduc Mayor Lars Hansen responded by saying that no decision will be able to be rendered until the city undertakes its official budget deliberations this coming fall. These proceedings will determine what will be included in the City of Leduc's 2027 budget.
