DEVON -- A new energy-efficient upgrade has been completed at GFL Twin Arena in Devon.
According to the Town of Devon, the upgrade consists of a new high-efficiency hot water heater for the facility. The new unit is expected to reduce energy consumption, lower operating costs, and decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the life of the system.
"This upgrade is a practical investment that helps reduce long-term operating costs while improving the efficiency our most heavily used recreation facility," said Devon Mayor Jeff Craddock. "Thank you to MCCAC for your support funding the replacement of our hot water heater at the arena. Projects like this allow us to be good stewards of both public dollars and the environment."
The total project cost came in at $40,110, with $11,982 supported by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC). The MCCAC is a partnership between Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta.
Because of the new high-efficiency hot water heater, the GFL Twin Arena is expected to save $858 a year in estimated energy costs. This comes in addition to 101 GJ per year saved in natural gas, while 80 tonnes of carbon dioxide are expected to be reduced over the life of the system.
The GFL Twin Arena hosts thousands of user hours annually, supporting minor hockey, figure skating, tournaments, and community events. In a statement from the Town of Devon, the latest upgrade will improve energy performance at the facility and help ensure it remains sustainable and cost-effective for years to come.
