CALMAR -- The Town of Calmar has given the green light to a major road improvement project.
At their regular meeting on Feb. 2, 2026, Calmar Council voted in favour of advancing the "52 Street and 52 Avenue Capital Project", which will include a 200mm asphalt overlay along the two roadways. In addition to this, the current plan is to also eliminate the west sidewalk on 52 Street in its entirety, and replace it with curb and gutter only.
Prior to this aspect of work moving forward, Calmar staff have been directed to engage in communication with the affected area residents and to report back to Council with any thoughts and concerns.
"The first phase is to have a conversation with the residents who will be losing a sidewalk," said Councillor Sean Carnahan. "The second phase is a communication with the entire stretch, which is going to be affected."
In their report, it's noted that the asphalt overlay could save maintenance work in the future and could potentially extend the life of the roads by seven to ten years. A cost estimate for the major project was brought forward last year, however, it was cut from the budget and therefore carried over to 2026.
In total, the project is expected to cost $2,084,524.
