CALMAR -- The Calmar Public Library is looking to add new programs and additional staffing hours in the coming year.
This comes as the library presented its annual budget request to Calmar Council at their regular meeting on Dec. 15, 2025. For the upcoming fiscal year, the library is seeking an increase of $17,700 over last year’s budget, which would bring their total funding to $211,900.
According to Tracey Blush -- Chair of the Calmar Public Library Board -- the additional funding request for 2026 would allow them to implement twelve to fourteen additional staffing hours per week. She notes that this would allow the library to boost its programming for the community.
"I do appreciate this sort of an approach to programming," said Councillor Sean Carnahan. "I embrace the concept and the idea of the library being a part of the programming within the community."
The Calmar Public Library offers a variety of programs for all age cohorts. These include literacy, creative, and fitness programs, as well as entertainment and club events. Mayor Krista Gardner says it’s a positive step for the library to explore expanded services.
"My kids always really enjoy the programming," said Mayor Gardner. "I was able to actually watch Nancy (Martin) in action at the Halloween program, and it was wonderful what she was able to do with the kids. I'm very much in support of this."
The library's mission statement says that their goal is to contribute to the well-being and health of the community by providing information, supporting literacy, and bringing people together.
