LEDUC COUNTY -- The Black Gold School Division has approved new school attendance boundaries for a pair of Leduc neighbourhoods.
The new boundaries will see students located within Leduc's new Anderson neighbourhood attend Linsford Park School from kindergarten to grade six, while French immersion students will attend École Leduc Estates School. Both English and French students will then move on to École Leduc Junior High School before heading to Leduc Composite High School for grades ten through twelve.
Associate Superintendent Norm Dargis says class complexities were not taken into account when determining the new attendance boundary, while noting that transit was a main driver of the rationale behind the decision.
"For transportation, it makes sense because most of our routes are already going there," said Dargis.
According to the BGSD's Board of Trustees, Linsford Park is currently operating at 81 per cent utilization, while École Leduc Estates School and West Haven Public School are operating at 89 per cent and 103 per cent utilization, respectively.
For the Fraser neighbourhood, students will attend East Elementary from kindergarten to grade six, while French immersion students will attend École Corinthia Park School. Much like the Anderson neighbourhood, both English and French students will then head to École Leduc Junior High School, and Leduc Composite High School starting in grade ten.
The current attendance boundary for East Elementary includes the area south of Rollyview Road and west of Lions Park Road.
Meantime, the BGSD Board also reviewed their Q1 Financial Report this week. The report shows that as of Dec. 31, 2026, total revenues were at $61.4 million with a surplus of $8.8 million. Associate Superintendent Chelsey Volkman says the significant surplus is due to the teacher's strike back in October.
"During the ATA strike, there were sixteen operating days where teachers were not paid," said Volkman. "The government, through the funding manual, states that this related funding will then be clawed back by Alberta Education."
Volkman says the Black Gold School Division is still anticipating a deficit by year's end.
