BEAUMONT -- Beaumont RCMP presented their latest crime stats to City Council this week.

Mounties say Beaumont has seen a reduction in crime year-over-year across most major categories, except for incidents of disturbing the peace -- which rose nearly 200 per cent from the same period in 2024. In addition, Staff Sargent David Marentette says they've also seen an uptick in incidents of spousal abuse.

"That's something we definitely want to focus on in the new year," said S/Sgt. Marentette. "Especially since one of our priorities should tie into that in a community-aspect kind of way -- whether that's education or resources available to spouses suffering from abuse."

For the statistics for July through September, the City of Beaumont saw noted decreases in the categories of uttering threats, fraud, break-and-enter, and mischief/property damage. Incidents of theft under $5,000 saw the biggest plunge, falling from 55 during the same period a year prior, to just 23 during Q2 2025.

Meantime, incidents registered under the Mental Health Act saw an increase, as Beaumont RCMP say they've now created a new specialized task force to deal with these particular incidents in the community.

"We're trying to be more innovative and modernized," said Keith Horwood, RCMP Assistant Superintendent. "Recognizing people are in distress, so we have a police and crisis response team; so, a crisis nurse works with our members so they can attend the call, not taking the call from the first line responder, to deal with the mental health issue."

For last year, police in Beaumont focused on strategic priority areas of community relations, road safety, and crime reduction.

"What we had heard very clearly was that the community wanted to see more police out on the streets," said S/Sgt. Marentette. "Not just in their cars, but whether it’s on the roads, sidewalks, going into businesses, schools, all of those types of visibility pieces and how we're going to interact with the community."

During the second quarter of 2025, Beaumont RCMP recorded seven impaired driving enforcement actions as well as 131 violation tickets with 64 warnings issued.
